Zanzibar Island

Zanzibar Island is the main island, Stone Town is a World Heritage Site and also an old trade center, with mosques and winding lanes. The 1883 House of Wonders is a former sultan’s palace with a clock tower. The archipelago was once the separate state of Zanzibar, which united with Tanganyika to form Tanzania (derived from the two names). Zanzibar is semi-autonomous within the union, with its own government. Zanzibar's main industries are spices (which include cloves, nutmeg, cinnamon and pepper), raffia and tourism of her beautiful white sandy beaches. Zanzibar is also the home of the endemic Zanzibar Red Colobus and the elusive Zanzibar Leopard. Zanzibar's marine ecosystem is an important part of the economy for fishing and algaculture and contains important marine ecosystems that act as fish nurseries for Indian Ocean fish populations.
