Lake Elementaita

Lake Elemantaita located between Lake Naivasha and Lake Nakuru in the Rift Valley of Kenya, is a salt lake known for its rich avifauna, among other huge concentrations of Greater and Lesser flamingos. However, the flamingos have severely declined after the Tilipia fish has been introduced in the lake. The Lake Elementaita surrounding area was designated as an Important Bird Area (IBA), a site of global significance for bird and biodiversity conservation, in 1999. The lake was designated a Ramsar site (wetland of international importance) in 2005. It was gazetted as a National Wildlife Sanctuary in 2010. The lake shore is an important area for animals such as Zebra, Gazelle, Eland and Warthog - and a sanctuary for the rare Rothschild Giraffe and also serves as a sanctuary for the nationally threatened colobus monkeys.
